FEATURED HUNTER:
Mark Berlin
Like many hunters, Mark began hunting with his father.  He started as a 7 year old and still enjoys hunting with his father today.  Mark still has the gun he got his first buck with as an eleven year old.  The 10 point buck from the photo was taken off his Missouri lease, where in his first year he has gotten a turkey, a doe, and both he and his father each harvested a buck.  He plans to renew his lease since he has his sights on larger bucks seen on the property.
Although Mark is on the film crew for Guns & Ammo TV on the Sportsman’s Channel, he rarely gets good footage of his own hunts.  “Filming yourself on video is difficult because you don’t want to jeopardize your hunt.  My suggestion if you are taking video of someone else is to always think a step ahead and be prepared for what you expect the hunter to do.  Anticipate their next move so that you’ll be ready for the kill shot. You do have added difficulty when you are filming someone else; keep in mind you have double the movement and scent.”

Mark speaks about his experience prior to Base Camp, “I hunted on public land, transitioned to private land, owned family land, and now I’m leasing.  Private land is now almost obsolete.  Public land is loaded down with people; there’s a lot of pressure.  Owning your own land requires a lot of maintenance, especially as parents age and you don’t live close by.  Leasing land is the best option.  Now I can just show up, I have a well taken care of cabin to stay in, and I don’t have to mow the grass.  It’s the best of all worlds.”

On Mark’s bucket list: Elk hunting out west in Colorado or New Mexico.

Well done Mark!

Planning Ahead

Now’s a great time to inspect a property.  Fall deer sign may still be on the ground and deer tracks can be more easily viewed in the snow.

The key to most successful hunts is to start looking early and often for the upcoming 2015 deer season.

January is a great time to touch base with a leasing agent in the state you’re thinking about hunting, especially if you have never hunted that state before.

Featured Property:

Butler County, OH  #6389
300 acres                 $8,800
Max Hunters:                    6

Super large suburban tract!!!! One minute you are in the city…and the next minute you are on this property and it feels like you are miles out in the country. There are over 80 acres of sweet cover on this 300 acre farm. Fields are in pasture at this time, but neighbors have crops. Dozens of points of cover go down into a beautiful ravine. Inside this cover there is buck sign everywhere. This is one of those farms you may kill a giant on. The property has nice access lanes to get you back to the cover. With the city on the east and a big golf course and metro-park about a mile to the west, this is a no brainer. If you are looking for a super property close to Dayton and Cincinnati, then this is it!!  This is a bow hunting only lease, along with youth gun. There is a 130″ minimum on bucks.Read More.
