Ask a serious duck hunter where they’d hunt if they could go anywhere, and Arkansas is near the top of the list. The state sits in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway, and every winter millions of ducks pour into its flooded rice fields, green timber and river bottoms. Arkansas duck hunting leases give you a private place to hunt that migration without fighting the crowds on public ground.

This guide covers why Arkansas is such a strong waterfowl state, the types of duck leases you’ll find, where to look, and what to check before you sign.

Why Arkansas Is a Top Duck Hunting State

Arkansas consistently ranks among the nation’s top states for mallard harvest. A few things make it special:

  • Location on the Mississippi Flyway. Ducks funnel down the Mississippi River valley each fall and winter, and eastern Arkansas sits right in their path.
  • Rice country. The Arkansas Delta and Grand Prairie grow a large share of the country’s rice. Flooded rice fields after harvest give ducks exactly the food and water they’re looking for.
  • Flooded timber. Arkansas is famous for green timber hunting, where you call mallards down through the oaks in shallow, flooded bottomland hardwoods.
  • Duck hunting tradition. Stuttgart calls itself the Rice and Duck Capital of the World, and waterfowl hunting is part of the culture across the eastern half of the state.

Why Lease Instead of Hunting Public Land?

Arkansas has well-known public waterfowl areas, but the best of them draw heavy pressure, and the state places extra limits on nonresident hunters using wildlife management areas. A private lease solves both problems. You control when the property gets hunted, how much pressure it sees, and how the water is managed, which is often the difference between a mediocre season and a great one.

Types of Arkansas Duck Hunting Leases

Rice and Crop Field Leases

Harvested rice, soybean and corn fields that hold water attract big numbers of ducks and geese. Many Arkansas farmers flood fields after harvest, and a lease gives hunters access to those fields during the season.

Flooded Timber Leases

Bottomland hardwood tracts along rivers like the White, Cache and Arkansas can flood naturally or through water control structures. These leases offer classic green timber hunting for mallards.

Reservoirs and Moist-Soil Units

Some properties have managed impoundments or moist-soil units designed specifically for waterfowl. These can be among the most consistent duck leases in the state.

Where to Find Duck Leases in Arkansas

Most of Arkansas’s best duck hunting is in the eastern half of the state. Hunters typically focus on:

  • The Grand Prairie around Stuttgart, with its rice fields and reservoirs
  • The Arkansas Delta along the Mississippi River, with vast agricultural ground
  • The White and Cache River bottoms, known for flooded hardwoods
  • The Arkansas River valley, with a mix of crop fields and river habitat

What to Look For in an Arkansas Duck Lease

  • Reliable water. Ask how the property floods. Natural flooding depends on rainfall and river levels, while pumps, wells and water control structures give you more control.
  • Food sources. Harvested rice and other grain, or natural moist-soil plants, keep ducks coming back.
  • Location relative to refuges and rivers. Properties near rest areas and major travel corridors tend to see more birds.
  • Hunting pressure and rules. Understand how many hunters are allowed and how often the property can be hunted. Resting a hole is often what keeps ducks using it.
  • Access and blinds. Check whether blinds are in place, who maintains them, and how you’ll get in and out.

Arkansas Duck Season and Regulations

Arkansas’s duck season generally runs from late November through January, split into segments. Season dates, bag limits and nonresident license requirements change from year to year, so always check the current rules from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission before you hunt.
